BALLAMBETTU

Last year I happened read three books plotted around Ballmbettu.Starting with Yaksha Bahndari a biography of  veteran yakshagaana artist Sri Sheenappa Bhandari published by Mangalore University which i thoroughly enjoyed. His son  Mr Shridhar Bhandari also rose to become star artist.Senior Bhandari had a troupe called Ballambettu Mela.I recommend all art lovers read the book.
You can watch energetic Shridhara Bhandari performing(thanks to original up loader)

Then came the Magnum Opus Sapna Saraswata  novel by Sri Ballembetttu Gopalakrishna Pai which won him Kenda Sahitya Academy Award. It is the story of Gouda Saraswath brahmins escaping Portuguese from Goa and migrating to south up to Cochin .One such family settles down after all ordeals at Ballambeedu later named Ballebettu. If you stand on the hillocks of Guttu,Guruvare,Dambeboole you will see the fertile valley called Ballambettu says a sentence in the novel.A well researched novel.
Then came the childhood memories of Smt Shakuntala Kini  'Ballmbettina Baalya' which was serialized earlier in  kannada online magazine Kenasampige. She is also from Ballambettu. Now working at AIR Mangalore.I will write about this book later.

When you travel from Vittal to Kasaragod you pass trough Adyanadka , Perla, Ukkinadka ,Ballamettu,Pallathadka and Badiyadka. Fascinated by  so many Adkas one traveler exclaimed in Tulu Yethadka! that place where he uttered later was named Yethadka.
There is one more novel Enmakaje dealing with Endosulfan problem originally written in Malayalam translated to Kannada. This novel is plotted around this place.
Tail piece: There is a place called Swarga(meaning heaven)near Perla.Bus agents in Perla can seen shouting whoever want to go to Swarga pl. come.My friend Dr Rajesh Ballal got a shock  of the day  when one of the patients he operated upon called saying that he is speaking from Swarga!
